About Rubies

Ruby is the July birthstone. Across many cultures, rubies are highly sought-after gemstones known for their distinct red colour symbolizing love and passion. Rubies are a 9.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it one of the only gemstones almost as tough as diamonds. Many designers and jewellers feature rubies in rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more. Before you buy jewellery with rubies for your July baby, there are few things you should consider.

Always ask your jeweller how the stone was treated. Rubies are often heat treated to achieve their iconic red colour and remove any purple undertones. Certain treatments can help the remove inclusions, change the tone, or make the stone more opaque. Common inclusions you may find on rubies appear star-like. Various treatments may wear down the stone faster if the material is of low-quality. Your jeweller should be able to disclose whether the ruby is natural or synthetic, and what kind of treatment it’s had.

To prevent scratching, store your ruby jewellery in a soft cloth, pouch, or padded box. In most cases, rubies can be cleaned using warm water, mild soap, and a soft coth or brush. If you have a glass-filled stone, only clean your jewellery wih a damp cloth. Alternatively, bring your ruby jewellery into your local jeweller to have the stone professionally cleaned with an ultrasonic steam cleaner.

Natural Rubies Vs. Lab-Grown Rubies

Generally, with retail jewellery, you’ll find a mix of both natural and lab-grown rubies. Most precious stone will be marked, stating whether they’re natural or lab-grown.

Almost all natural rubies have some form of an inclusion. A professional jeweler should be able to point out certain inclusions that most natural rubies have. Lab-grown rubies are developed to be as flawless as possible. Although lab-grown rubies are flawless compared to natural rubies, they’re often more affordable.

With lab-grown rubies, technicians can create rubies that are virtually flawless at any shape and size. Distinguishing between these stones is incredibly difficult and nearing impossible to the untrained eye. With natural rubies, you should ask to view the authentication paperwork before purchasing.

July’s Birthstone Meaning and Spiritual Connections

In India, rubies were once called the “king of precious stones,” for their beauty and hardness. It carries a heavy association with life, youth, power, and blood. Because of it’s signature red colour, many believe it has strong healing powers that can grant good fortune, wisdom, and health. Because ruby is the hardest coloured stone, it’s said that it can protect it’s wearer from harm or illnesses.

Rubies for Cancariens

For the sensitive Cancer, ruby is meant to help build strength and confidence. Cancers are known to be flighty and unstable due to their emotions. Precious stones like rubies can help a Cancer baby feel positive vibes, initiating feelings of love, courage, and stimulating creativity.

According to the spiritual theory, ruby jewellery helps Cancerians induce the strength and vitality which the sign may be lacking. Considering the fact that Cancers are prone to be very shifty or unstable in nature, the gemstone acts as a very good positive influence that enhances the life, love, and career of the wearer.

Rubies for Leos

For the prideful Leo, rubies only amplify the unquestioned confidence they feel. Rubies, however, can help a Leo feel more gratification towards their responsibilities and challenges. Leos should feel a heightened sense of devotion and integrity towards their own work by questioning the unwavering confidence a Leo feels towards everything they do.
