Artina’s Jewellery recognizes that colonization, policies, and institutions have significantly changed Indigenous Peoples’ relationships with galleries. For many years, colonial ideologies upheld by museums were used to exclude Indigenous artists, their work, and their voices.

Today we acknowledge that in order to challenge the colonial lens that’s restricted Indigenous artists throughout history, we must represent Indigenous art mindfully. Artina’s wishes to act as a gallery featuring various artists from all across Canada. Our mission is to share, respect, and better appreciate Indigenous art.

Please feel free to contact us with any issues regarding something you saw in-store, on our website, or our social media.

Our Store's History

Artina's Jewellery Victoria

Artina is the middle name of original owner, Susan Artina Black. Susan's uncle Art had promised to give his new baby niece five hundred dollars if Susan’s Mom named her child after Art. When Susan was born a girl her mother decided to give her the middle name Artina to cash in on Uncle Art’s promise.

Susan offered to use her unique middle name of for her and her husband's store. Husband John loved the new name and felt it encompassed their vision for the business. “Art” for the hand-crafted wearable art they were selling and "Tina” meaning ‘little one’ in latin which stood for beautiful tiny things like jewellery.

When the Blacks decided to retire in 1999, they sold the business to one of their loyal customers, Lori DeVuyst. Lori took pride in continuing the store’s original concept and legacy while still growing the business with her family. Part of that growth was opening a second location Gastown, Vancouver in August of 2009.

The current owner of Artina’s is local resident Lera Zakreski. Lera moved from her country of origin, Ukraine, in 2010. She had heard that Vancouver Island was full of artisans but was surprised and excited of the possibilities at Artina's. Her contribution to growing the business was launching Artina's website and sharing our love of jewellery worldwide.
