Norman Seaweed was born on the Nimpkish Reserve in Alert Bay, British Columbia on Cormorant Island on February 9, 1951. He is one of eight children. He completed grade 10 in 1964 before starting work as a commercial fisherman. He began to carve wood to subsidize his income and as he became more proficient he turned to carving full time. In 1977 he spent three months with the renowned silver carver, Lloyd Wadhams Sr. which pushed his interest in working with the material. His representations of the Eagle, Wolf, and Orca (Norman’s favourite creatures) are widely sought after. Through the simple lines of the traditional Kwakwaka’wakw style, Norman focuses on both maintaining his cultural heritage and the exploration of modern possibilities
