Until the 1940’s, glass fishing floats were used by fishermen in many countries to keep their nets afloat. It use to be common to find floats that had broken free from nets, washed up on a west coast beach. Kim comes from a family of fishermen, and glass fishing floats were collected by many of them. As a self taught artisan, she was attracted to the beauty and mystery of the precious spheres, and working with the floats brought about the name, “Keeping Afloat”. The pieces are tumbled in seawater and beach sand for 2 weeks, then carefully drilled. Some pieces include abalone and swarovski crystal, combining earth and water to create a truly original west coast treasure.
