Properly storing your jewellery prolongs its life and lustre while keeping you organized. Recently I went through my jewellery collection and found pieces I totally forgot about. I also found a lot of mismatched earrings, stuff that’s out-of-date, and some worn-out jewellery. I took this as an opportunity to think of other ways to organize my jewellery. When organizing your jewellery, I find it best to start by going through your current collection.

Tips For Storing Jewellery
Currently, my jewellery is stored in a classic jewellery box. Personally, I don’t know if this is the best solution for me, plus the box doesn’t quite fit everything I need it to. Jewellery boxes are suitable in most situations. As for myself, I’m a very visual person and like to see everything in front of me. But I do have a few pieces that need a little more protection, such as my heirloom pearls.
Luckily, there are plenty of options for whatever your needs are. It’s important to decide what jewellery organization method is the best for you, whether you’re like me or you want to have a "jewellery island" in your walk-in closet like a Kardashian. When determining what method is best for you, ask yourself:
- How much space do you have?
- How much jewellery do you need to store?
- Do you have jewellery that’s delicate?
- Do you have any high-end jewellery that needs extra security?
- Do you often forget about certain pieces of jewellery?
- What room are you storing your jewellery in?
- What kind of décor do you have in that room?
Once you've answered these questions, you should be able to figure out which storage method is best for you. Remember that you can also use multiple storage methods if you have various needs. There are some other things you should keep in mind when organizing your jewellery:
- Tuck rings into soft bolsters.
- Allow your dangle earrings to hang freely.
- Secure earrings using the back posts.
- Lay necklaces on individual posts to prevent damaging the chains.
- Store your most delicate jewellery in soft pouches.
Going Through Your Old Jewellery
Start by throwing away jewellery that’s broken, worn out, or has missing pieces. Next, try on your other jewellery to decide if it’s still your style. If you have jewellery that’s still wearable but not for you, give it to a thrift store or a good friend. Now that you’ve narrowed down how many pieces you need to store, it’s time to figure out what method is best for you.
Storing Precious and Semi-Precious Gemstones
Certain gemstones like ammolite are very soft and need to be stored out of the sun. If you’re curious about which gemstone needs more care, read up on the Mohs hardness scale. Some jewellery should be stored in closed containers, regardless of your personal preference. For that reason, I recommend everyone buy a small jewellery box, even if it's just a small travel box.
Storing Jewellery in Your Bathroom
As mentioned, some stones need extra care and should be stored in jewellery boxes. If you’re storing your jewellery in your bathroom, you need to be mindful of the water, humidity, and heat in your bathroom. When storing jewellery in your bathroom, you should look for something that will protect it from water damage like an acrylic jewellery organizer.
Is It Practical?
I don’t have a lot of space in my apartment, so I don’t have a lot of jewellery. In my current living situation, I would need jewellery storage that doesn’t take up a lot of space. However, if jewellery is a big priority for you, then you might want to consider making a jewellery drawer or getting a hanging wall jewellery organizer.
More importantly, your jewellery storage should fit into your home’s décor and your lifestyle! I have so many pieces that I wear daily. I keep these pieces in catchall dishes so I don’t have to go searching for them all the time. It also looks super cute since I use it as décor.
